Appearance: Physically, Aerith is rather unremarkable. She is of average height and slender with a slightly larger-than-averge bust, narrow waist and average hips. Her hair is long and dark brown; she keeps it neatly plaited with a pink ribbon at the base of the braid. However, her bangs and a few locks of shorter hair often fall out of the braid, framing her face prettily. Upon closer inspection, however, it is discovered that Aerith has vivid green eyes, a cute button nose, and pouty, cupid's bow lips. Her face looks very delicate, and her skin is clear and dewy. She has long, dark eyelashes and thin, well-shaped eyebrows. She prefers not to wear big bustle gowns, but she wears a long, pink dress that reaches to her ankles, with a long sleeved red jacket over it, a pink ribbon around her neck, gold wrist cuffs, and shin-length boots.

Personality: Aerith is a strong soul within a small body, mainly due to the fact that she has the ability to use magic. She keeps secrets well because she hardly ever talks to people who would care to know--a self-defense tactic from trying to evade being found by ShinRa. Her abilities, particularly her special hearing, also make her seem to be wise beyond her years; if not in what she says, then in the light in her eyes. However, she often hides behind a persona of being charming, pleasant, and even slightly naïve. This persona helps her to hide her true abilities She is also fairly modest about herself, particularly her magical abilities--she prefers to keep to herself about her gift, because she doesn't want ShinRa to find her. However, despite this sense of self-preservation, she cares more about others than about herself. She has no problem using her healing magic on a perfect stranger. This makes her fairly reckless, because she will use her healing magic at a time that could put herself in danger.

Abilities/Weaponry: Aerith mainly uses white magic, particularly healing and making plants grow faster. However, she is also adept at (and most well-known among the hunters for) Soul Reading.

White magic
Healing: In order to heal, Aerith must meditate and speak an incantation, which is in Latin. For small wounds, she can use a talisman as a focus point to speed the healing process; but for more severe wounds, she must meditate on the wound itself. This can be a problem, for once the incantation has started she cannot finish until the wound is completely healed. This means that she is not very well-suited for in-battle healing.
Plant Growth: Most of the time, when increasing plant growth Aerith simply says a short incantation over the water she uses on the plants, which increases their growth at a gradual pace. This is helpful for plants that are to be used as food, and can even work to make plants grow in otherwise inhospitable places. However, she also has several talismans that can cause quick growth--for instance, an ivy growing to be 30 feet up a sheer wall in a matter of a minute. This is useful for getting over tall walls, but Aerith has no control over where or how the plant grows, so it is not always the best method.
Gray magic
Soul Reading: Aerith has a special pair of glasses, which she has basically turned into a soul reading talisman. She can slip them on and activate the spell, which lasts for one hour and will allow her to determine whether a person is a vampire, demon, or human--however, it does not work on dhampyrs, fey or werecreatures, which are all read as human (Fey do not register at all). The spells placed on the glasses take a full two days to renew, so Aerith prefers not to use them unless she absolutely needs to.

Aerith is also trained with the staff, though she has never truly been good at it. And from birth she has had the ability to hear the souls of the dead, though it is not a power she has worked to develop in any way; in fact she often ignores it altogether.

Weaknesses: Physically, Aerith is weaker than the average person. Also, being a pacifist, she prefers not to use her physical or magical abilities to fight--in fact, she abhors any kind of violence. And because of the nature of her magic, most of them leave her greatly weakened afterwards, while also incapacitating her while in the process of casting the magic.

History: Aerith was born in Russia to Faramis Gast, the former head of ShinRa's Science Research Department, and a native Russian named Ifalna, at a hotel called Icicle Lodge. However, Gast was killed by his former assistant, Hojo, when Aerith was 20 days old, and she and her mother fled the lodge when Hojo tried to kidnap them to take them back to ShinRa Corporation for study.

Seven years later found them in America, with Ifalna dying of a mysterious illness. Aerith was put into the care of a childless widow named Elmyra Gainsborough, and lived with her until she went off to college at the age of 18.

All throughout her life, Aerith had a sense that she was different from others. She came from a long line of magic users, whose powers were passed down matrilineally from generation to generation, mother to daughter. One unique trait she had inherited was the ability to hear the souls of the dead speak to her; but she was afraid of the power and any others she might have, so she often ignored or denied her abilities and her ancestry.

When Aerith was sixteen years old, she met a young man with spiky black hair and violet eyes, by the name of Zack. During his brief stay in America (for he was German) she developed feelings for him, but never had the chance to act on them before he returned to his home country. However, she never forgot him or his kind eyes, nor the strangely huge sword he had brought with him from Germany.

Aerith, like most young women, went off to college when she turned 18, though she stayed close to home so that she could take care of her ailing adopted mother. It was while at college that she finally acknowledged her ability to use magic, and she took two years of Latin so that she could learn how to pronounce the incantations that she could use to heal wounds and make plants grow faster, among other small magics. She also discovered a spell that would allow her to create a talisman to determine the true nature of a person, and at the behest of her friends, she learned it as well. Her teacher was in magic was actually one of her professors and an old family friend, a man whom everyone referred to as "Tseng". He was always very kind to Aerith, and didn't seem surprised in the least to find out that Aerith had magical traits.

However, two years later, things changed between Aerith and Tseng. While in a private magic training session, Tseng admitted to having feelings for Aerith, feelings that spanned back to when she was only a child. He tried to kiss her, but she ran away, shocked and slightly disturbed. In response to Tseng's admission and following actions, she decided to take a semester off and go to Italy, to give herself time to think about what he'd told her and to figure out her own feelings. She rented an apartment in the slums of Allupato and took a job at a florist's shop, where she currently takes flowers out onto the street to sell them. Ever since she started working at the shop, business has boomed, possibly because of her plant magic. However, with the 'epidemic' and quarantine, it's getting more and more dangerous for her to be out on the streets...
